If the problem will be resolved in Seconds, don’t choose a solution that is Minutes away.
In 32 years of local law enforcement, FBI, and private security, I have learned many things about keeping people safe from violence. In that time, technology has changed exponentially and it would be foolish to not embrace some of the technological improvements available to us for our important work. However, technology rarely helps in the exact moment of violence. No App can instantly remove the violent individual standing in your space.
The one thing that has not changed in that time, is the need to make the right decision, at the right time, and for the right reasons.
Right Decision = The one that increases survival
Right Time = Now
Right Reason = Because it is Just
Often times I see people choose the wrong tool, at the wrong time, and for the wrong reasons. Most of this is attributable to lack of awareness, bad or no training, very little actual experience with violence. We must work from the reality of our situation. The person standing in our space who is advancing with the intent to cause us physical pain - is often using time very effectively. His OODA loop is in fast continuous motion and if we choose to make the wrong decision - he will choose the outcome.
So what do I mean about a problem that will be resolved in seconds and not using a solution that is minutes away?
Some specifics, in no particular order:
If in a gunfight, use two hands if you are able
The time to use the radio and call for back-up is when you are not in imminent danger
If in a violent encounter, the phone should be used for confrontation not notification
Asking a supervisor or friend for guidance is great if standing next to you, otherwise update later when the problem is resolved
Call 911 when you have put significant distance from the person trying to hurt you
Time is the one thing we will not get back, please use it wisely.
