From The Field

If the Problem Will Be Resolved in Seconds

Over 32 years working in local law enforcement, the FBI, and private security, I have observed that while technology has advanced significantly, it rarely helps during moments of actual violence. There is a timeless principle I live by: making the right decision, at the right time, and for the right reasons.

Let me define those three components. The right decision is one that increases your survival. The right time is now. The right reason is because it is just.

Many people select inappropriate tools at wrong moments due to lack of awareness, insufficient training, or limited experience with violence. When someone with intent to cause harm is physically present and advancing, time becomes their advantage. You must work from reality, not theory.

The core lesson is simple: match your response timing to the threat timeline. When problems resolve in seconds, minute-long solutions fail.

Use two hands in a gunfight when you are able. Call for backup only when you are not in immediate danger. Use your phone for notification, not confrontation, during violent encounters. Defer to supervisors or friends only when they are physically present. Call 911 after you have achieved distance from the threat – not before.

Time is the one thing we will not get back. Please use it wisely.
